Your Guide to Planning A Wedding in Gaston County, North Carolina.

Hey friend!

Welcome back to the blog. My name is Leah Davis, I am the face and the heart behind Fairlight Visual. I am coming today to give you a brief overview of what it looks like to plan a wedding in the Gastonia, NC area and what you need to have in mind. Gaston County is the heart and soul of where I was raised and what I come from.

You only get married once (hopefully), so you might as well do it right and book the Gaston County vendors that are the best of the best.

Having recently relocated from the Anderson, South Carolina area to the Gaston County, North Carolina area (my hometown), the venues and vendors around me have changed. I have been doing some intensive research about the best-rated wedding vendors and prettiest venues in the area. These are vendors and venues that have great reputations in my hometown.

And while I have not had a client choose any of these venues yet, these venues stand out for various reasons that I will address. These venues are listed in no particular order, they each have their pros and cons like any venue. So without further adieu, let’s get into the good stuff. Here is what you need to know about planning your Gaston County wedding!

Step 1: Picture Your Perfect Day

Before jumping into all the planning details, take a moment to dream about your wedding day. What kind of setting and vibe do you want? Here are some ideas to guide you:

  • Indoor or Outdoor: Do you see yourself wearing white under the bright blue Carolina sky, or inside a huge white ballroom? The area surrounding Gaston County and Charlotte, NC has a variety of venues, from scenic outdoor locations to elegant indoor spaces.

  • Style and Theme: Are you going for a timeless look, a garden party, or something sleek and modern? The Charlotte area offers venues to match any style. There are options around us that truly suit any need.

  • Guest List: Will it be an intimate ceremony with close friends and family, or a large event with 150+ guests in attendance? Knowing at least a vague idea of your ideal guest count will help you choose the right venue and be sure that everyone feels comfortable and not packed in like sardines!

Step 2: Finding Your Dream Venue

The Charlotte and Gastonia area is home to a range of stunning wedding venues, from grand ballrooms to charming outdoor spaces. Here are some tips to help you find the perfect one:

  • Online Searches: Websites like The Knot, WeddingWire, and Zola can help you filter venues by location, style, and size.

  • Local Magazines: Check out local bridal magazines for venue ideas and inspiration.

  • Ask Around: Don’t underestimate the value of word-of-mouth! Friends, family, and local vendors often have great venue recommendations.

Step 3: Catering Options for Your Big Day

Food is an important part of your wedding, and the West Charlotte area offers a diverse array of culinary options. Consider these ideas for catering your celebration:

  • Venue Catering: Some venues offer in-house catering services, while others allow you to bring in an outside caterer of your choice.

  • Food Trucks: For a fun twist, hire a food truck to serve unique dishes or local favorites. Many local businesses such as Tin Can Pizzeria in Asheville, or your local Moe’s caters too!

  • Signature Drinks: Don’t forget the cocktails! Work with your caterer to create a signature drink that reflects your style as a couple. I LOVE when couples have two highlighted drinks curated by the couple on a little sign!

Step 4: Capturing Your Wedding Day

Your wedding photos and videos will be cherished for years to come, so finding the right photographer is key. West Charlotte has many talented professionals to choose from. Here’s how to find the best fit:

  • Research: Browse reviews and portfolios online to find a photographer whose style aligns with your vision. Do you like dark and moody or light and airy photos? Do you want posed photos, or more of a documentary style? These are important things to think about!

  • Do you like the photographer: Make sure that you like your photographer! You will be spending several hours with him/her on the day of your wedding. Make sure that they are professional, prompt, and the right person for the job!

  • Engagement Shoot: Consider booking an engagement session to get comfortable in front of the camera and with your photographer. This will also give you photos for your social media and any mailed invitations leading up to the wedding day!

  • Coverage: Discuss your desired photo coverage with your photographer. Full coverage captures all significant moments beautifully. Some photographers offer different packages, while others charge hourly. Communicate the moments and emotions you want preserved. This helps your photographer understand your vision and provide an accurate quote. Discussing these details upfront ensures cherished memories that reflect your special day.

Step 5: Choosing Vendors and Adding the Finishing Touches

Gaston County has a range of local vendors to help make your wedding day perfect. Here are some key ones to consider:

  • Florist: Work with a florist to create beautiful bouquets, centerpieces, and other floral designs that match your theme. I have had great experience with Carolina Roses, who creates elaborate centerpieces and arrangements.

  • Music: Whether you prefer live music or a DJ, choose entertainment that complements the mood of your reception.

Step 6: Getting Your Marriage License

Once you have a least a little bit of a vision for your perfect day in mind, it’s time to start thinking about the legal side. Here’s how to get your marriage license in Charlotte or Gaston County when the time comes:

  • Visit the Courthouse: Head to the Mecklenburg County Courthouse at 832 E 4th Street, Charlotte, NC 28202. The Gaston County Courthouse is located at 325 Dr M.L.K. Jr. Way #1004, Gastonia, NC 28052.

  • Bring Your IDs: Both you and your partner need to bring valid identification, such as a driver’s license or passport.

  • Optional Step: While it’s not required, bringing your Social Security card can help speed up the process.

  • No Waiting Period: North Carolina doesn’t have a waiting period, so you can get your license the same day you apply. The fee is typically around $60.

  • Don’t forget about changing your last name after the wedding takes place! I’d recommend purchasing a NewlyNamed Box if you aren’t familiar with the legal formalities of weddings.

Step 7: Enjoy the Process!

Wedding planning can feel overwhelming at times, but it’s also a fun and exciting journey. Remember to enjoy every step along the way—you’re creating memories that will last a lifetime!

That’s all I have in regards to planning your Gaston County wedding. I hope these tips are helpful for those like me that get overwhelmed by decisions, especially if it’s something I am a bit unfamiliar with!
